Words from the Publisher LaDonna Boyd

To our loyal readers,

In recognition of Mother’s Day, I salute my own mother, Mrs. Yvette Boyd, and all the women who have shown motherly love and compassion to another. A mother’s love is truly a gift from God, and we hope you enjoy the special stories shared by our staff about the special women in their lives.

Congratulations to the three beautiful and poised African-American women who wear the crowns of Miss America, Miss USA, and Miss Teen USA. They are an inspiration to many and may their accomplishments open doors for future generations! As a former Miss Tennessee in the Miss Black USA pageant system, I greatly appreciate the representation that this trio of queens provides for women of color.

We are just a few weeks away from the 113th National Baptist Congress, which will convene in Charlotte, NC, June 9–14. We certainly are excited about the broad spectrum of speakers, seminar and workshop leaders, Christian entertainment, late-night speakers, presenters, and luncheon keynotes.

This year’s Congress theme is “Fellowship with Christ,” based on 1 Corinthians 1:4–9. Host Pastor Robert C. Scott and his team are planning diligently for our arrival in the Queen City.

Our week will begin with our annual Congress Sunday school, following by morning worship with our host church, St. Paul Baptist Church.

Our Faith Leaders’ Luncheon, featuring the dynamic Pastor Bryan Carter is sure to be an inspiring and informative session, with Pastor Denny Davis serving as master of ceremonies.

Ambassador Suzan “Sujay” Johnson Cook headlines this year’s Women of Wisdom luncheon. Ambassador Sujay is known across the nation and in many parts of the world as a powerful woman who can speak the Word. The same can be said of Pastor Shirley Caesar. Don’t wait to get your tickets, as this event is sure to sell out!

This year’s Praise and Laughs features an inspirational gospel concert with artist Erica Campbell of the world-renowned Mary Mary duo, and will be hosted by church lady Ms. Shirleen (aka Christianee Porter of The Christi Show). The evening promises to be one of inspiration and entertainment.

Dr. Kevin W. Cosby, pastor of St. Stephen Church in Louisville, Ky., and president of Simmons College of Kentucky, will bring the Thursday morning message. St. Stephen is the largest African American congregation in the state.

Friday’s general session will include an inspiring message from NAACP president/CEO Mr. Derrick Johnson.

All attendees, including drill and dance team groups, are encouraged to secure lodging at our overflow hotels,

The Host Committee and the R.H. Boyd Congress staff are working feverishly, putting together last minute details to ensure a Congress that both informs and inspires.
